About Me
Creator of West Cinco
My name is Ulises, I am from Watsonville, CA. I am currently a CSUMB Student. I am a first generation Mexican-American. I do not consider myself a writer or a storyteller but I am deeply rooted in my Latine heritage. Growing up in a tight-knit and mainly latine community I learned early on that every family has a unique story, shaped by many hardships. I realized from a young age that the stories of Latine whether it was about migration, culture, or identity were often overlooked or misunderstood. That's why I created this space to share authentic, diverse and raw life stories from my community and others!
Through this website, I aim to highlight voices that deserve to be heard, whether they are mine, people I know, family or friends. My hope is to preserve and celebrate my and the stories of many but with the focus of being on the environment and neighborhood where I grew up.
I’ve been influenced by the works of authors like Reyna Grande who capture the complexity of Latine lifes stores through storytelling. One of my favorite books from her are The Distance Between Us and Across a Hundred Mountains.
Thank you for stopping by. I hope these stories inspire you, challenge you, and connect you to a world that is sometimes overlooked but always worth sharing.
